Becoming Zorba the Buddha

Inspired by Osho's vision. A journey where spirituality and materialism are no longer experienced as opposites.

The highest spirituality begins when the conflict between spirituality and materialism comes to an end.

Throughout history, we have admired two very different kinds of people.

On one side are those who master the material world. They build successful careers, create wealth, enjoy comfort and make the most of life's opportunities. Yet beneath their achievements, many continue searching for a deeper sense of peace and fulfilment.

On the other side are those who devote themselves to spirituality. They radiate stillness, simplicity and inner freedom. Yet many appear to have found that peace by stepping away from the very world in which most of us live, leaving us with the impression that spirituality and worldly life cannot truly coexist.

Must we really choose between success and serenity? Between abundance and awareness? Between celebration and meditation?

Osho believed we need not.

His vision of Zorba the Buddha offers a third possibility. A complete human being who lives with the depth of a Buddha and the celebration of a Zorba.

A spiritual being who lives in the material world, but the material world no longer lives within him.

He participates fully in life without becoming imprisoned by it. He creates wealth without becoming possessed by it. He enjoys relationships, beauty, comfort and success without making them the source of his identity. He meditates deeply without escaping from the responsibilities and opportunities of everyday life.

His freedom lies not in renouncing the world, but in no longer being psychologically attached to it.

Perhaps this is the role model many of us have been searching for all along. Not someone who chooses between the world and spirituality, but someone in whom the two have become one.

Osho called this possibility Zorba the Buddha.

This journey is our humble exploration of a timeless question:

How does one become Zorba the Buddha?

Why does spirituality and materialism become opposites?

Most of us begin life by naturally engaging with the material world. We pursue education, careers, relationships, security and success. There is nothing wrong with this. It is simply the first chapter of the human journey.

Then, life begins asking deeper questions. Success no longer feels complete. Loss, uncertainty, ageing or simple maturity draw our attention inward. We discover meditation, awareness and spirituality.

Yet this is often where a new conflict begins.

Many seekers gradually conclude that if spirituality is to deepen, the material world must be left behind. The very things that once mattered now seem like obstacles. The pendulum swings from attachment to rejection.

Perhaps this division is not the destination of the spiritual journey.

Perhaps it is only a stage within it.

Perhaps true spirituality is not about choosing one over the other, but about reaching a place where the conflict itself disappears.

What prevents this integration?

If becoming whole depended only upon understanding beautiful ideas, many of us would already be living that way.

Yet something deeper continues to divide us.

  • Fear prevents us from embracing life completely.

  • The illusion of doership keeps us trapped in struggle and control.

  • Our relationship with the material world fluctuates between attachment and rejection, preventing us from celebrating life in its fullness.

These are not three separate challenges.

They are three expressions of the same inner fragmentation.

This journey has therefore been designed around three experiential Kriyas, each addressing one of these dimensions and gently guiding us towards the integrated life that Osho called Zorba the Buddha.

Three Kriyas. One Journey.

Conducted by Akarma

This journey unfolds over approximately nine months. Not by coincidence, but by design. Just as it takes nine months for a child to be born, this nine-month journey is an invitation into a second birth. Not the birth of a new body, but the birth of a new consciousness.

Every lasting transformation begins by dissolving fear. Once fear begins to soften, surrender becomes possible. And when surrender matures, life naturally flowers into celebration. This is why the journey unfolds in this sequence. Each Kriya prepares the ground for the next, making the whole far greater than the sum of its parts.

While each Kriya is inspired by one of Osho's profound discourse series, this is not a discourse study programme. The discourses provide the philosophical foundation. The journey itself unfolds through contemplative practices, reflective assessments, experiential exercises, habit-building rituals, group dialogue and conscious application in everyday life.

The intention is not simply to understand wisdom.

It is to embody it.

Mrityunjaya Kriya

Preparing to Die Well

Duration: Approximately 2 Months

Most people spend their lives learning how to live well. We prepare for careers, relationships, families and success. Yet very few pause to ask an equally important question.

What does it mean to die well?

Inspired by Osho's discourse Main Mrityu Sikhata Hoon, this Kriya explores death not as something to fear, but as one of life's greatest teachers. While Osho's discourse provides an important philosophical foundation, the journey extends far beyond its study. Through reflective assessments, contemplative practices, experiential exercises, habit-building rituals and conscious application in everyday life, participants gradually cultivate a healthier relationship with impermanence.

As fear begins to dissolve, life is no longer postponed. Relationships become more authentic, choices become more conscious and every moment is lived with greater presence and gratitude.

Mrityunjaya Kriya is not about becoming preoccupied with death. It is about learning to live so totally that death no longer casts a shadow over life.

Akarma Kriya

The Art of Surrender

Duration: Approximately 5 Months

Once fear begins to soften, another question naturally emerges.

Who is the one constantly trying to control life?

Inspired by Osho's discourse Athato Bhakti Jijnasa, Akarma Kriya explores surrender as a lived experience rather than merely a philosophical understanding. Osho's discourse becomes the philosophical foundation, while the Kriya expands those insights through guided self-inquiry, experiential practices, reflective dialogue, behavioural experiments and daily disciplines that gradually loosen the grip of the ego.

Action does not stop.

Responsibilities do not disappear.

Life continues to unfold.

What slowly dissolves is the burden of believing that everything depends upon "me".

Participants begin to discover the freedom of acting wholeheartedly without being psychologically imprisoned by action.

Ashta Lakshmi Kriya

The Celebration of Life

Duration: Approximately 2 Months

When fear has softened and the burden of doership begins to dissolve, life naturally becomes available for celebration.

Inspired by Osho's discourse Jeevan Darshan, this Kriya explores what it truly means to live as a celebration. The discourse provides the philosophical inspiration, while the journey extends into reflective practices, weekly experiments, conscious habits, self-assessments and experiential processes centred around the eight dimensions represented by Ashta Lakshmi.

The purpose is not to accumulate prosperity.

It is to become prosperity.

As participants consciously cultivate the qualities symbolised by the eight Lakshmis, abundance is no longer experienced merely as material wealth. It begins to express itself as courage, wisdom, gratitude, creativity, meaningful relationships, purpose, generosity and joyful participation in life.

This is the flowering of Zorba the Buddha.

A spiritual being who lives fully in the material world, while the material world no longer lives within.

Who is this journey for?

This journey is for anyone who resonates with Osho's vision of Zorba the Buddha and feels called to live a life where spirituality and materialism are no longer experienced as opposites. It is for those who wish to participate fully in the world without becoming imprisoned by it, and who aspire to cultivate a way of being where awareness and abundance, meditation and celebration, inner freedom and worldly engagement naturally come together.

An Invitation

Perhaps becoming Zorba the Buddha is not about becoming someone extraordinary.

Perhaps it is about remembering a way of being that has always been possible.

A way of living where awareness and abundance are no longer enemies, where meditation and celebration enrich one another, and where spirituality is not an escape from life, but the very way in which life is lived.

Perhaps the life you have been trying to build is waiting for a different kind of beginning.

Perhaps it is time for your second birth.

No matter where you are today, if the vision of Zorba the Buddha resonates with you, there is a clear path for you to begin.
